What a Solver Is Actually Calculating

Understanding what the numbers on screen mean makes everything else faster to learn.

A solver calculates how play settles when both sides are doing the best they can. It does not answer "what do I do with AA"; it assigns, across every hand you could hold in that spot, how often each action gets chosen.

That is why the screen shows splits like "Bet 68% / Check 32%." It does not mean you win 68% of the time — it means if you held that hand 100 times here, betting 68 of them is what balances out. Once you can read a frequency that way, every other feature in the tool works the same way.

Who It Suits, and Who Should Wait

GTO Wizard is powerful, but reaching for it in the wrong order turns it into memorisation.

Ready for it

• You have worked through pot odds and equity
• You can explain why you played a hand the way you did
• You keep running into the same difficult spot (BTN vs BB flops, say)

Not yet

• Reading a range chart still takes effort

2. Pick one hand that is not there — work out why. Usually the answer is how many players are still to act behind you
3. Run 10 drill hands — see whether the range you just looked at comes back to you under time pressure

FAQ

Q1: How far can I get on the free plan?

Preflop range lookups (100/day) and drills (10 hands/day) are included, so you can take your preflop accuracy as far as it goes without paying.

Paid plans start earning their keep when you want to look up postflop spots routinely, or import your own hand histories in bulk. Until you feel that need, the free plan is fine.

Q2: If I play exactly what it shows, will I win?

"You will lose less" is the more accurate answer.

Solver strategies are built so that nothing your opponent does hurts you much. They are not built to maximise profit against mistakes. When an opponent has a clear leak, attacking it earns more.

Use the solver's answer as your baseline, then decide how far to deviate based on the table.

Q3: There are too many settings. Which do I pick?

Match the conditions you actually play. Set the game type (cash or tournament), the number of players, and the stack depth to whatever your usual table looks like.

Look at a solution built on different conditions and both the ranges and the frequencies are a different game. Stack depth matters most — carrying a 100BB answer into a 20BB spot can be actively harmful.

Q4: How much should I use it each day?

Ten drill hands plus one spot you were unsure about — about 15 minutes.

Touching it briefly every day and closing one gap at a time beats long sessions staring at solutions.
