How Many Players in Poker? | Table Size & Tournament Scale
Learn how many players can play poker. A standard table seats 2–9 players, with terms like HU (Heads-Up), 6-max, and 9-max. Major tournaments can attract tens of thousands of participants.
Poker Is Typically Played with 2–9 Players
In poker (Texas Hold'em), 2 to 9 players sit at a single table.
A standard deck has 52 cards. In Texas Hold'em, each player receives 2 hole cards, up to 5 community cards are dealt on the board, and 3 burn cards are discarded—one before each round. This means the theoretical maximum is (52 − 8) ÷ 2 = 22 players, but tables with 10 or more players are virtually unheard of. Considering game pace and table space, 9 is the practical upper limit.
Poker Terms Related to Player Count
Poker has several terms that describe how many players are at the table.
HU (Heads-Up)
HU (Heads-Up) means playing one-on-one with just 2 players.
In tournaments, the field gradually shrinks until only 2 players remain at the table—this is HU. Online poker also offers dedicated HU tables where you start 1-on-1 from the very beginning. HU plays so differently from 3+ player games—with bluffing and reads becoming far more important—that it's often described as "a completely different game."
Max
Max refers to the maximum number of players a table can seat. A 6-player maximum is called "6-max," and a 9-player maximum is called "9-max."
| Format | Max Players | Common Setting |
|---|---|---|
| HU | 2 | Late-stage tournaments, online HU tables |
| 6-max | 6 | Most popular in online poker |
| 9-max | 9 | Standard for live poker and major tournaments |
Most poker tables are either 6-max or 9-max. Online poker mainly uses 6-max, while casinos and live events tend to use 9-max.
Player Counts in Other Poker Variants
While 6–9 players is standard for Texas Hold'em, other poker variants have different player counts.
For example, Chinese Poker deals 13 cards to each player. Since a standard 52-card deck can only accommodate 4 players at most, it is typically played with 2–3 players (3-max).
As you can see, the ideal player count and max size depend on the specific game's rules. For more on poker variants, check out this article:
Tournaments Can Attract Tens of Thousands
So far, we've been talking about the number of players at a single table. In tournaments, the scale is entirely different.
Major tournaments fill venues with dozens or even hundreds of 9-max tables. As players are eliminated, tables are consolidated until only a handful of players remain at one table. This final table is called the "Final Table."
The WSOP (World Series of Poker) Main Event—the world's largest poker tournament—has seen over 10,000 entrants in some years. Online tournaments can be even larger, with tens of thousands of players competing simultaneously.
| Tournament Type | Typical Entrants |
|---|---|
| Small amusement venue events | 10–30 |
| Regular casino tournaments | 10–50 |
| Major live events | 50–10,000+ |
| Large online tournaments | 50–tens of thousands |
Even though a single table holds a maximum of 9, an entire event can see thousands to tens of thousands competing. That's the scale of poker tournaments.
