What Is Heads-Up Poker? | How to Play, Action Order & Setup for Two Players

Can You Play Poker with Just Two People? What Is Heads-Up?

Yes—poker (Texas Hold'em) works perfectly well with just two players. This two-player format is called Heads-Up (HU).

Heads-Up comes up in three main situations:

  • Playing with a friend or partner — all you need is a deck of cards and some chips to get started at home
  • Tournament finals — as the field shrinks, the last two players remaining play Heads-Up
  • Online HU tables — dedicated 1-on-1 tables are available on most poker platforms

Heads-Up is often described as a completely different game compared to playing with three or more players. The range of hands you play widens dramatically, and reads and bluffs become far more important.

In this article, we'll walk you through the rules, action order, and how to get started with Heads-Up poker.

Heads-Up vs. Standard Games: Key Differences

There are several important differences between Heads-Up and a typical 6–9 player game. Let's start with an overview:

AspectHeads-Up (2 players)Standard (6-max / 9-max)
Players26–9
PositionsBTN/SB and BB onlyUTG through BTN, SB, BB (6+)
Preflop action orderBTN/SB → BBUTG → … → BB
Postflop action orderBB → BTN/SBSB → … → BTN
Play styleFast-paced, read-heavyMore positions, tighter play

The biggest difference is that there are only two positions. The BTN (Button) also serves as the SB (Small Blind), while the other player is the BB (Big Blind).

In a standard game, the BTN and SB are different players—but in Heads-Up, BTN = SB. This is the most common point of confusion, so make sure you remember it.

Understanding the Action Order in Heads-Up

The most confusing part of Heads-Up is the action order. It flips between preflop and postflop, so let's break it down clearly.

Blind Placement

In Heads-Up, the two players take the following roles:

  • BTN/SB (Button / Small Blind): The player with the dealer button posts the small blind
  • BB (Big Blind): The other player posts the big blind

To repeat: BTN = SB. In a standard game, the BTN and SB are separate players—but in Heads-Up, the same player holds both roles.

Card Dealing Order

Cards are dealt BB → BTN/SB.

You might think, "Wait—aren't cards normally dealt starting with the SB?" In poker, the rule is that the BTN (dealer button) always receives their cards last. Since BTN = SB in Heads-Up, the BB gets dealt to first.

Preflop Action Order

During preflop (the first betting round):

BTN/SB → BB — the BTN/SB acts first.

The BTN/SB chooses to raise (increase the bet), call (match the blind), or fold (give up the hand), and the BB responds. Since the BB has already posted the big blind, it makes sense for the BTN/SB to act first.

Postflop Action Order

On the flop, turn, and river, the order reverses:

BB → BTN/SB — the BB acts first.

From the flop onward, the BB goes first and the BTN/SB goes second. Because the BTN/SB gets to see their opponent's action before deciding, the BTN/SB (in position) has an advantage postflop. This is a core poker principle—acting later means having more information.

Common Mistakes

Common Mistakes

  • "Does the SB/BTN always act first?" → No. Only on the preflop. From the flop onward, the BB acts first.
  • "Where is UTG?" → There is no UTG (Under the Gun) in Heads-Up. There are only two positions: BTN/SB and BB.
  • "Isn't dealing to the BB first a mistake?" → In Heads-Up, BTN = SB, so dealing to the BB first follows the rule that the BTN always receives cards last.

How to Set Up a Heads-Up Game with a Friend

Want to play poker with just one friend? Here's how to get started at home.

What You Need

  • One deck of cards (52 cards) — remove the jokers
  • Chips — if you don't have poker chips, coins, tokens, or even paper slips with numbers work fine
  • Dealer button — a coin or any small marker will do

Setup Steps

Follow these 5 steps to start playing:

1. Split the chips evenly

Give each player the same number of chips. We recommend 50–100 BB each. For example, if the BB is worth 2 chips, give each player 100–200 chips.

2. Set the blind amounts

Decide the SB (Small Blind) and BB (Big Blind) amounts. The standard ratio is SB : BB = 1 : 2.

StyleSBBBChips per PlayerFeel
Casual12100–200Relaxed, long session
Tournament-style12 (double every 5–10 min)50–100Escalating tension

For a tournament feel, raise the blinds every 5–10 minutes (e.g., 1/2 → 2/4 → 4/8 → …) to keep things exciting.

3. Decide the first BTN

Rock-paper-scissors, coin flip, draw a card—whatever works. The player who gets the BTN also serves as the SB.

4. Post the blinds

The BTN/SB posts the small blind, and the other player posts the big blind into the pot (center of the table).

5. Deal the cards and start

Deal one card at a time to BB → BTN/SB, for a total of 2 cards each. The hand has begun!

Hand Flow (Heads-Up Edition)

Even in Heads-Up, the game follows the same 4 betting rounds as standard Texas Hold'em:

  1. Preflop — Look at your 2 hole cards. BTN/SB → BB action order
  2. Flop — 3 community cards are revealed. BB → BTN/SB action order
  3. Turn — 4th community card is revealed. BB → BTN/SB action order
  4. River — 5th community card is revealed. BB → BTN/SB action order
  5. Showdown — Remaining players reveal their hands; the stronger hand wins

After each hand, pass the BTN to the other player and start the next hand. Repeat and enjoy!
