What Is a Bomb Pot? A Special Hand That Skips Preflop

A bomb pot is a special hand format used in cash games. Everyone at the table puts a set amount (typically 2–5 BB) into the pot, all preflop action is skipped, and play begins from the flop.

In a normal hand, most players fold preflop and only 2–3 see the flop. In a bomb pot, everyone sees the flop, which creates bigger pots and unexpected outcomes.

📝 Bomb pots originally started as a "fun hand" agreed upon by the players, but more and more poker rooms now offer them officially. They're usually scheduled at set intervals — every orbit, every dealer change, etc. Whether you can opt out depends on the room's rules.

How a Bomb Pot Works

The format is straightforward.

1. Everyone Antes In

All players put a predetermined amount (typically 2–5 BB) into the pot. This is agreed upon by the table. In most cases, this ante replaces the regular blinds for that hand (though this varies by room).

2. Deal Cards and Open the Flop

Hole cards are dealt to everyone, and there is no preflop action at all. The flop (three community cards) is immediately revealed.

3. Post-Flop Plays Out Normally

After the flop, play proceeds exactly like regular Texas Hold'em. Action begins from the small blind position, moving clockwise, with all the usual options: check, bet, raise, and fold. The turn and river follow the same pattern.

💡 Since every player sees the flop, bomb pots are always multiway. Unlike the typical heads-up or three-way pots, you'll generally need a stronger hand to continue.

Double Board Bomb Pot — Two Boards at Once

The double board bomb pot is one of the most popular bomb pot variations.

Just like a regular bomb pot, everyone antes in and preflop is skipped. The difference is that two separate boards (sets of community cards) are dealt simultaneously on the flop. Each board receives its own turn and river card as well.

At showdown, the pot is split in two — each board's winner takes half the pot. If the same player wins on both boards, they scoop the entire pot.

PLO Bomb Pot — Four Hole Cards, Maximum Action

In a PLO bomb pot, each player receives four hole cards instead of two. Hand construction follows PLO (Pot-Limit Omaha) rules: you must use exactly two hole cards and exactly three board cards to make your hand.

PLO bomb pots are often combined with double board, and the "double board PLO bomb pot" is extremely popular in American poker rooms. Four hole cards plus two boards means strong hands are completed more frequently, which cranks the action up to the max.

Coo Coo Richie — All-or-Nothing on the Flop

Coo Coo Richie is the highest-variance bomb pot variation.

The setup is the same as a regular bomb pot, but after the flop is dealt, the only options are pot-bet or fold. If someone pot-bets, other players can only call — no raising allowed.

The turn and river are dealt automatically with no further betting. In other words, you decide on the flop whether you're in or out, then watch the rest unfold. Some tables play with a fixed stack size (e.g., 10 BB) to cap the risk.

📝 The origin of the name "Coo Coo Richie" is unclear. The game gained popularity around 2023 in Las Vegas cash games.

There are several reasons bomb pots have caught on.

More Action, More Excitement

Since everyone sees the flop, pots tend to be much bigger than normal. When a cash game table starts feeling quiet, a bomb pot livens things up.

The Skill Gap Narrows

Skipping preflop removes the hand selection element — one of the most important edges in standard poker. Everyone sees the flop on equal footing, reducing the preflop skill gap.

That said, position and hand strength still matter just as much from the flop onward.

A Shared Event for the Whole Table

Bomb pots are a group experience. The communal nature creates a different energy from the usual individual competition, fostering conversation and camaraderie at the table.

💡 Bomb pots are fun, but the antes add up over time and can affect your bankroll. Make sure the ante size and frequency are set at a level the whole table is comfortable with. If you'd rather not participate, stepping away before the button completes an orbit is generally considered acceptable etiquette.
